Here is the procedure for changing the resolution of your screen. It works for nVidia at least (I can't test it with anything else.) The resolution set on initial installation is the maximum available. The procedure for reducing it is:

In /etc/X11/xorg.conf: 1: look in the "Screen" Section for the line labeled DefaultResolution; note the value. (Or change it to a lower value if desired and note that.)

2: in the SubSection "Display" having the Depth noted above, delete all of the Modes higher than the desired screen resolution (delete, don't rearrange them!).

3: save the file and exit.

4: restart the system (logging out and back in may be enough, but to be sure click "System" at the login manager screen and select "Restart X Server" if you don't do a complete restart).

1.: An alternate way you might try is to use Control Center, Peripherals, Display, Administrator Mode

2. : Then click the Show only modes... and begin to experiment with the resolutions that are offered.

3. : Each time you select a new resolution, you will need to restart the X Server. You can do this by Ctl-Alt-Backspace. Sometimes the program will offer a Test and you can select to keep it or not.
