Freespire supports many of the more popular Internet Service Providers (ISP's). You can find a list of these, with specific instructions for each, by clicking on the Internet Connection Tools icon on your Freespire desktop.
If your ISP is not one of the ones specifically supported by Freespire, you might still be able to connect to the Internet by trying the below instructions.
Before proceeding, you'll need the following pieces of information:
- Local access phone number(s) for your ISP
- Your Login ID
- Your Password
Part I
1. Plug your computer's modem into a working phone line and start your computer. From the Freespire desktop, click on the Launch menu in the lower left corner of your screen.
2. Choose Run Programs >> Internet >> Internect Connection Tools >> Internet Dial-Up Tool(KPPP)
3. Click the Configure button.
4. Under the Accounts tab click the New button.
5. You may then add the access phone number(s) for your Internet Service Provider (ISP). (If you do not know these settings, you will need to contact your ISP for them.) Click the Add button to begin entering numbers.
6. Click OK twice to return to the below screen and then click the Connect button to dial up and connect to the Internet. If you are successfully connected you do not need to proceed further with this FAQ.
Optionally, you may wish to drag the Internet Dial-up Tool icon to your desktop, so that it's easy to access any time you wish to connect to the Internet. To do this, simply click on the Life Jacket icon in your kicker panel and select Connecting to the Internet. This will open a window with several icons. Find the Internet Dial-up Tool(KPPP) icon and drag that icon anywhere onto your Freespire desktop. Choose Copy here when prompted. You can then drag the icon to a convenient place on your desktop so that it's always handy.
If you are NOT connected to the Internet, please proceed to Part II and use the next steps to configure your modem.
Part II
1. From the Internet Dial-Up Tool(KPPP), click Configure.
2. Choose the Modems tab and select New.
3. Choose the Device tab and enter a name for your modem in the Modem Name.
4. Next to Modem Device it should read: /dev/modem. Change /dev/modem to the next option (which should be /dev/ttyS0).
5. Select the Modem tab and then click the Query Modem button.
6. If a message appears stating "Sorry, the modem doesn't respond" , then go back to step 4 and change your device from /ttyS0 to /ttyS1. Again, select the Modem tab and click Query Modem, and continue this process until it finds your modem.
Once you have found your modem, return to step 6 in Part I to connect to the Internet.
If you are unsuccessful in connecting to the Internet using your existing ISP, you should try one of the supported ISP's for Freespire. You can find a list of these, with specific instructions for each, by clicking on the Internet Connection Tools icon on your Freespire desktop.
