Freespire 2 Status

   

Following is the status of the Freespire development. This is only a high-level snap shot on what's being worked. This is not a replacement for the change log.

Week Ending 29 June 2007

Freespire 2.0 development highlights from this week:

• Network Control Panel:
  • Transplanted the firewall tab and functionality in KNetworkConf.
  • Fixed Bug 639: Configure Network Settings in Starup Wizard does nothing.
  • Fixed Bug 661 - Multiple Ok and Cancel buttons in Profiles
• Fixed Bug 25: Evaluate and find a Bootsplash solution
• Fixed Bug 156: System hard locks when RAM disk fills on Freespire Live
• Fixed Bug 163: Add an option on the LiveCD to install
• Fixed Bug 315 : Live Boot: No Root Password Requires User Established
• Fixed Bug 335: Kernel panic at end of CD install.
• Fixed Bug 347: Switch to unionfs on Live (Casper's version)
• Fixed Bug 362: livecd jumps directly to grub prompt, use ISOLINUX instead of grub
• Fixed Bug 401: Odd characters on screen on shutdown.
• Fixed Bug 506: rt31 ralink wireless chipset (need community to verify this is working)
• Fixed Bug 585: Install ISO attempts to resume suspended systems
• Fixed Bug 603: Syntax error in /etc/devices conf_util
• Fixed Bug 618 - 1.2.145 Kernel panic at install.
• Fixed Bug 637: Defaulting to wrong icon set
• Fixed Bug 643: fos-crystal-kmenu-freespire needs added to the ISO
• Fixed Bug 645: 1.3.x live, can't unlock screen if passwd is not set.
• Fixed Bug 651: Make takeover installs unmount all partitions
• Fixed Bug 657: Nvidia FX5200 is using VESA drier. The installer now sets nvidia as the default driver in debconf, so that xtraconf does the right thing.
• Fixed bug 654: Modified xtraconf to add Option "nologo" "1" if nvidia driver is selected.
  Suppress Nvidia splash at boot time.
• Fixed Bug 664: OS Version Returns Command Not Found
• Fixed: KMenu icon

IRMA Freespire 2.0

• Exported, updated, built and uploaded Afrikaams (af) packages
• Exported, updated, built and uploaded Azerbaijani (az) packages
• Exported, updated, built and uploaded Bulgarian (bg) new packages packages
  • Fixed multiple entries for the Bulgarian project
• Exported, updated, built and uploaded Croatian (hr) packages
• Exported, updated, built and uploaded Finish (fi) packages
• Exported, updated, built and uploaded Hindi (hr) packages
• Exported, updated, built and uploaded Tamil (ta) packages

Week Ending 22 June 2007

• Network Control Panel:
  • Documentation
  • Fixed bug 624 - Unsupported Platform Dialog Box when attempting to manage network profiles
  • Fixed bug 625 - Blank Network Interfaces panel when attempting to manage profiles.
  • Fixed bug 610 - VPN Connection Manager - Missing Icon doesn't launch
• Fixed: Broadcom wireless chipsets.
• Researched the prisim2_usb chipsets, they are no longer maintained, won't fix.
• Built and uploaded fix for clock in startupwizard
• Fixed bug 306 in los-sysreportui
• Fixed bug 598 Kicker bar raises to the top of the screen
• Fixed bug 575 by removing buttons on the Lmail toolbar and defaulting to small icons. (bug is logged upstream)
• WORKSFORME : Network share manager settings do not hold after reboot
  This seems to work, might have been fixed with other sharemanager updates.
• FIXED: Enable kwallet subsystem by default (Network control manager and Network Share manager use this now)
• FIXED: Licensing Information does not display in some languages
• FIXED: Update Install Panels for Freespire
• FIXED: Configure Network Settings in Startup Wizard does nothing.

  • Note: we now have 224 new strings in the IRMA live DB that needs to be translated
• Started preparing the karchive and fos-startupwizzard data for import
• Start converting the knetwork PO files into XLIFF files (getting them ready for import)
  • Note: the knetworkmanager tool uses knetwork, which has many available translations that can be used by the knetworkmanager tool.
• Created a couple of scripts to convert PO files into XLIFF and place them into the right language directory (e.g.: Linspire__pt_BR)
• Tested import...(in irma-test)...

On going work

New Build - Getting very close on this, should be releasing a nightly build tonight or tomorrow.

Week Ending 15 June 2007

Freespire 2.0 development highlights from this week:

• Network Control Panel:
  • Fixed the zombie thread issue.
  • Bug #616 -Wireless tab is blank for systems w/o a wireless device (as noted, in this case no wireless tab or recommended message: No wireless devices were found.)
    Fixed:
  • Wireless Tab only appears if a wireless network device is found
  • Wireless and Firewall not available via Control Center > Network Settings
  • Profiles tab should be renamed Network Settings for consistency w/KDE
    For better consistency's sake, the Profiles menu entry is now Networks, and the option underneath it is "Manage Networks"
    The first tab under this window is "Network Settings"
  • Documentation
• FIXED : Share folder (Samba) does not work.
  • updated:los-installer, kuser, kdepasswd to support creating and updating samba passwords.
    This should fix the user list problem.
• TESTED: kdm and kdmtheme fail to configure on upgrade
• INVESTIGATED: Disks do not automount when booted in Live
  It seems that in the latest test builds, the disks are automated.
• Updated Lmail to 2.0.0.4pre & Lbrowser to 2.0.0.4.
• Fixed: Missing Icon:
• Fixed the permissions issues that we were having with other partitions in jiffymount.
• Blacklisted the alsa oss modules
• Setup hal scripts to work with suspend 2 disk
• Worked with QA to determine if we should default suspend 2 ram to off
• Worked with QA to fix some random install errors. We wound up putting predetect back into the build. We may try to figure out specifically what predetect does that needs to be done to prevent the install errors. (Note: this is the kernel panic that has manifested in the latest builds)

Week Ending 08 June 2007

• Network Control Panel is now included in the build. (still bug fixing)
• FIXED: Network Share Manager can't mount any folder that has anonymous access right
• FIXED: Update background images; updated the background images, hopefully 'Alpha' is now gone from everywhere.
• FIXED: Share folder (Samba) does not work.
• FIXED: media manager - Added media manager icon to menu.
• AIGLX Next steps include figuring out how to get AIGLX/Composite/Compiz stuff integrated. A WIKI page will be created documenting how to use compiz/beryl/etc.
• FIXED: Pidgin icon missing from quick-launch panel
• FIXED: KDE Wallet Manager not Included in Launch Menu
• FIXED: Bogus 'msdfs proxy = no' in smb.conf. This is a very old bug upstream bug in kdenetwork that only started causing problems in recent versions of samba.
• FIXED: Can't add additional users to a share in file sharing menu
• Replaced kdesu calls with gksu in startup wizard. It now looks better (IMO) and also only requires the user to enter the password only once
• Built Pidgin and a OTR plugin (encryption plugin)
• Added Suse Search option to the Launch Menu
• Built gizmo-call plugin for 2.0
• Built oboe update for 2.0
• Replaced Java 1.5 with 1.6.
• Fixed suspend to disk on swap files
• Removed kcmshell clock from los-sudoers

Week Ending 25 May 2007

Highlights of this week:

• Network Control Panel: (Goal - in build on Tuesday)
  • UI cleanup
  • command to disable a network interface through KNetworkManager.
• Updated the installer to use swap partitions instead of swap files on takeover installs
• FIXED: The Control Center lists the kernel version instead of the distro version
  Added a new application that shows the OS Version.
• FIXED: Toggle Printer Sharing error
  Updated smb.conf.
• FIXED: No quick restart option available in the 1.2.x branch.
  Enable a KDM option that causes X to be restarted everytime you log out. This means logout does exactly what the old quick restart used to do.
• FIXED: smbmnt must be installed suid root for direct user mounts
  Made smbmnt, smbumount, mount.cifs, and umount.cifs setuid.
• FIXED: permission issue for mounting shared folders
• FIXED: sharemanager freezes when you try to connect to a share
• IRMA Freespire 2.0
  • Continue testing Freespire International Build - PTBR
  • Translated strings

  • Added a Wireless Info panel
  • Added functionality to tray applet to toggle to a 'trusted' flag
  • Trusted networks are networks that will connect to automatically
• More kicker/icon updates
• xorg combinators
• Added desktop file to LSongs which will allow users to select it upon inserting an Audio CD
• Removed duplicate entries for US keyboard in the installer
• Fixed error in the installer when selecting "Swiss" as a keyboard option
• Updated the installer to use swap partitions instead of swap files on takeover installs
• Resolved/researched desktop file localization issue
• Added fos-config-xdg-menus & fos-config-kde packages into IRMA.

• Reorder Kicker Icons
• Updated launch menu and wallpaper
• NVU 1.1 built for Freespire 2.0
• Finished fixing doreport
• packaged 235 webcam drivers
• migrated pwcx to the 2.6.20 kernel
• Fixed Jiffyboot issues
• Modified the kcontrol source in order to allow users to 1.) login as root without a password or 2.) auto-login as root
• Packaged CNR 7 for Freespire 2.0.
• Forked the build procedure because it's going to take some fiddling.
