Home-->Community-->Bugzilla-->Bugs!-->Report A Freespire Bug

Freespire Bugzilla server is Live for bug tracking. If you aren't sure if the behavior you are seeing is indeed a bug you should start a post in the Freespire Forum first to discuss it with other users. Once you have determined that what you are seeing is indeed a bug that can be reproduced you should add it to Bugzilla. Please understand that this page is now historical in nature regarding bug reports.

Before submitting a bug, please check the Bugzilla database and Release Notes to see if the problem you are encountering is already a known issue with Freespire test builds and being worked on [Note: historical bugs is not an active list of verified bugs]. Also remember to update your bug reports after new releases. If the bug has been resolved, update your bug in the database, and if the bug still exists, update the current Freespire/CNR version in the bug report.

Note the Following is Historical Data

The proper format for submitting bugs is:
OS Version/Build | CNR Version | Forum Username | Email | Bug Summary | Can you duplicate this bug? (Y/N) | Links to more info | Detailed description and additional information.

For example, your bug report should look like this:

Freespire 0.0.6x | 6.0.5x | Dr.Jones | Ken@Freespire.org | Icons Move on Desktop | Y | www.KDE.org | Desktop Icons move on desktop w/o user intervention. To reproduce this bug, here is what you do...yadda, yadda...

Important: Please replace the version information in the above example with the version you are using. To find the version information, open CNR, Choose the "Help" menu, and then select "About CNR."

Please report the bug in the appropriate category below.

INSTALLING/BOOTING

Freespire 0.0.69, 0.0.76, 1.0.2, 1.0.13, 1.1.57, 1.1.73, 1.1.84, 1.2.42, 1.2.49 | gedbxas@gmail.com | When booting and during hardware detection when installing freespire, process freezes because of Samsung SyncMaster 757NF monitor, however it's possible to unfreeze it by turning off monitor and then turning on again (but it's not a solution, because you have to do it everytime system boots!).

  • Unable to reproduce on available hardware. Please submit a diagnostic report with this message so that we can attempt to isolate this issue. | ryan@linspire.com
    • How can i make that "diagnostic report"? I think problem resides in monitor detection and xorg creation scripts.
      • Applications -> Help Center -> Additional Support Options -> Diagnostic Report | ryan@linspire.com
        • Emailed info and did diagnostic report.

Freespire 1.1.57 and 1.1.73 (possibly earlier releases also)| NA | Jasp | andrew.betts@jasp.com | Install mode fails to boot from rewritable media | Y | http://www.andrewbetts.com/freespire-patches/rw-media-patch.html | If installation ISO is burnt to rewritable media, and the hardware supports mounting recordable media as rw, install-mode boot will fail when trying to mount /mnt/cdroot.

Freespire 1.0.13 | CNR 6.0.61 | mmmna | not posting any email | Cannot install | Duplicate = yes | UPDATE: I guess the third time is a charm... all is running, albeit slow internet connection speeds. Why multiple failures at first attempts to install? I do not know. using verified CDR media which I purchased from MadTux, CDR boots and runs fine as a live CD (but only if launched from a full power down restart). When installing to hard disk, I cannot create a bootable system, I get "Error 505" in all install methods (Advanced as well as standard install). The error occurs near the end of the install phase... the bargraph has reached 100% when the error message appears. Athlon 1.0 GHz, 512meg PC133 SDRAM, motherboard is DFI AK75EC (uses a VIA chipset), graphics are nVidia GeForce 4 MX440, hard disks are: 120Gb split as 118Gb root (/dev/hda1), balance is swap (/dev/hda2); 40Gb as user (/dev/hdb1). External hardware modem, PS2 mouse, 3Com 3C905B 10/100 NIC. All hardware has been supported and has worked under different versions of SuSe Pro 9.X, Slackware 9.0 and 10.2, Red Hat, Debian Woody etc., so this Freespire 505 error likely is NOT unsupported hardware.

Freespire 1.0.13 | | coleydog | coleydog182@gmail.com | Error code 224 on CD install. Occured when both the HDD (Master) and CD (Slave) drives were on the same IDE cable (IDE 1). Moved the CD drive from IDE 1 as slave to IDE 2 as master leaving only the HDD on IDE 1 and re-installed with no problem.

  • Unable to reproduce on available hardware. Please submit a diagnostic report with this message so that we can attempt to isolate this issue. | ryan@linspire.com

Freespire 1.0.13 | robertmwilliams@gmail.com | When booting the CD the progress indicator reaches about 40% and halts. Pressing the 'esc' key to view the console shows a never ending parade of 'azx_get_response timeout' messages. I am sure this relates to the intel hd audio as I have seen it with older versions of ALSA. There is no additional progress from this point and the system is non-responsive. None of the usual boot cheatcodes help (acpi=off, noacpi, noapic, nolapic, irqpoll or pci=biosirq). CD itself is known good and has been used to install to other desktop and 2 laptops. For reference this also happens with Linspire. This is an AMD Turion64 X2 based laptop. LSPCI available, from another distro that is working, if needed.

Freespire 1.0.13 | luis.bolinches@gmail.com | When booting with the CD in laptop with IDE CD-ROM drive. The only thing that happens is I am drop to GRUB prompt. Checked on the forums that more people have same behaviour. Thanks

Freespire 1.0.13 | 6.0.61 |hobieone@gmail.com |after install aon two completly different computer with different hardware. both experience boot times of 2 plus min and os over all operating very sluggishly. niether nvidia cards were detected both had the default genric driver with no 3d acceleration. did improve performance only marginally when nvidia drivers wer manually installed and 3d acceleration is turned on. machine 1 specs are amd athlon xp 1600, 1gig 3200 ddr dual channel ram, soltec nforce 2 utra motherboard (drives are ide not on the sata), and a geforce 5500fx w 256mb graphics card 8x agp. machine 2 amd t-bird 1.2gz, 512mb sdram pc133, ecs mother baord w/ via chipset. and 64mb geforce 4000mc card on a 4x agp slot. found it odd that both system has the same boot times roughly and the exact same issues with different chipsets and graphics cards. wich has me to beleive that the issue isn't freespire but the installer which is not picking up the hardware correctly and then loading everything with default generic drivers instead. i check and my hard ware is supported on the os. i have a copy of linspire 4.5 instlled that onnboth machine and they run great so does ubuntu when that installed on them. why i came to the conclusion that the issue is in the installer somewhere

Freespire 0.0.69 | Shagbag | I downloaded the Freespire 0.0.69 iso and checked it with md4sum. No errors. I burned it to CD and rebooted. I used GParted to create an ext3 file system on my new IDE HDD. I toggled the flag to be 'boot'. I then re-booted and tried to install Freespire to my HDD but kept getting the error that it "could not find a bootable partition on my hard drive..." I am not sure if this is a bug. It could be that my laptop's HDD is being reported as hdb, not hda (I noticed this in GParted). I do not know why this is occuring as I have only one HDD in my IBM Thinkpad T40p. The only other drive is the DVD-ROM drive. If the problem is at my end and not a fault with Freespire, perhaps the installer can be updated to take into account such hardware configuration anomalies.

EDIT: I was using an IDE drive from another PC where I had that drive as slave. I´d forgotten to take off the Master/Slave/CableSelect IDE pin header. Duh! It works fine after I did that. I´m typing this from the successfully installed Freespire :)

KDE/DESKTOP

Freespire 1.0.13 | The broken 6 | RamonS | ramons theatsign gmx dot de | Desktop goes bonkers during mourse movements after switching between CPUs using Belkin OmniCube 4-Port | Can you duplicate this bug? Yes, every single time | Links to more info: N/A| I use a Belkin OmniCube 4-Port KVM switch to switch between my various PCs. All of them run some Windope version except for one that runs Freespire. After switching away from the Freespire box and returning bacxk to it, the mouse movements open many applications, the mouse pointer bounces wild across the desktop, and the keyboard is dead (not even CTRL+ALT+DELETE works). I also tried a 2port IOGear KVM switch with the same result. The keyboard is a very old Cherry G80-1000, the mouse is a Logitech Cordless Mouseman Optical. Booting straight into Freespire works fine and mouse and keyboard work as expected. Seems to be an issue with KDE(?) or X(?) when mouse and keyboard are not really there. Will crosscheck with Ubuntu/Kubuntu install and report findings here. In any way, this is utterly annoying.

Freespire 0.0.69 | 6.0.53 | JDoyle | emailhere | Cannot change display resolution from user account | Y | http://tinyurl.com/n64wk | To reproduce this bug, here is what you do, try to change the display resolution from the default "Admin privileges" user account first run wizard...yadda, yadda

Note: chakkaradeep | I was able to change the resolution from the default "Admin Account". I opened Launch->Utilities->Screen Resize & Rotate tool and changed the resolution.

Note: JDoyle | from the configure desktop dialog (First Run Wizard), settings will not be saved.

Note: JDoyle | still exists in 0.0.76

Note: Joey | This bug will be fixed on next release.

Fixed in 1.0.2, Thanks.

USB Flash Drive does not unmount...

Freespire 1.0.13 | 6.0.61 | inkybutton | inkybutton@gmail.com | USB Flash disk does not unmount after clicking "Unmount" | Y ||

  • Insert flash disk.
  • The icon of the flash disk will appear.
  • Select the icon, then right click "unmount".

The Unmount button does not work. I tried to unmount my USB disk, and the little application busy cursor appeared. But after a while it just disappeared. In the end I had to remove the USB disk without unmounting it.

CNR

Freespire 0.0.69 | 6.0.53 | C.C.Chakkaradeep | chaks.yoper@gmail.com | CNR checks and reports cnrsuite6 update available always | Y | NIL| At first boot, CNR reported there is an update for cnrsuite6 and it updated and restarted CNR.CNR worked fine after a system reboot. Now, whenever I click on Check For Updates, it checks, starts installing cnrsuite6 automatically and then reports cnrsuite6 is already installed. I tried for 4 times, and it happened all 4 times.

Note: xarius | You are receiving errors because Click-n-Buy software is not available through apt-get. You MUST use CNR to install Click-n-Buy software.

Freespire 0.0.76 | 6.0.61 | Egon_Spengler | attiladehun2002@yahoo.com | CNR more icons in KDE menu | Y | NIL | After editing CNR options to remove "CNR More" items from K Menu, "CNR More" remains even after system restart.

OTHER MISC. APPLICATIONS

Freespire 0.0.69 | 6.0.53 | Steve Taylor | taylorfamily3688@sbcglobal.net | Weird things happening with Opera mail | Y | none | After installing Opera and creating a mail account, some weird things happen. Whenever I select a message in the Opera mail window, it opens a blank page in Opera and it opens the Freespire Web Browser which starts loading blank pages with the label "Untitled". It keeps on loading new pages until I can manage to close the program. It generally gets to around 48 pages or so before I can get it closed. Left unchecked, it will open hundreds of pages. When when I select the next message in Opera, it all starts over again. This happened when running live on an AMD 64 x2 3800 and with Freespire installed on an Athlon 1700+. It does not happen in Linspire 5.0. Opera was installed from CNR in all cases.

Added 7/22/06: I just tried this in 0.0.76 and had the same problem. There must be some setting somewhere that is not right. I haven't been able to find it yet.

Added 7/29/06: Same problem happens in 1.0.2. I have tried changing my default web browser and default email to Opera in the control center but that didn't help. This is Opera 9.0 from CNR which runs OK on Lispire 5.0. I also have Opera 9.0 running on Kubuntu 6.0.6 and Xandros 3.02 with no problems. Also Win98SE and Win2000. It is only in Freespire where this problem occurs.

Added 8/11/06: Same problem still there with 1.0.13.

Added 3/9/07: Opera 9.10 is now working fine in Freespire 2 V1.2.42.

Freespire 0.0.69 | 6.0.53 | Bro.Tiag | hdflhtp@bellatlantic.net | Can not install Enlightenment DR-17 on Freespire| Y | http://forum.freespire.org/showthread.php?p=5608#post5608 | In addition to what I posted in the forum, here is a link to My aisle that has all the stuff that I used to install e17 in Five-O http://www.linspire.com/lindows_products_aisle.php?aisleid=12033 as well as a link to the script I used to install e17 on Five-O http://sevcsik.atw.hu/

Freespire 0.0.69/0.0.79 | 6.0.53/6.0.61 | xarius | smccuan@crawfordcountydu.org | StarOffice7 (yes 7) presents an error upon launching and is therefore unusable. The error is as follows: "Staroffice can not be started due to an error in accessing the StarOffice configuration date. Please contact your system administrator. The following internal error has occurred GetStorage, name: "No Content! "

Freespire 1.0.13 | 6.0.61 | x2v1jump | x2v1jump@gmail.com | Instant Messenger (Gaim) crashes|http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ | When I open an MSN account on Instant Messenger (Gaim) the application crashes. But if I open another IM service (yahoo, jabber,icq,etc..) the IM not crashes.

SOLVED

I resolved that Freespire installs with aclocal-1.4, yet Enlightenment DR-17 needs aclocal-1.9 to get configured. After installing FOS, from CnR I un-installed aclocal-1.4, then installed my CnR aisle for e17, ran my script & now I have e17 running on Freespire. I'm still unsure what the "AM_PATH_GTX" error means though.

Installation of java-common as suggested on Opera site support does not help. Verification java speedtester here: http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp

Freespire 1.0.2 | 6.0.61 | deanb2 | deanb@gbtn.net | Citrix ICA fails in 1.0.2 | Y | none | The Citrix ICA client fails to start in 1.0.2RC1 with a seg fault. It worked fine in Freespire 0.76. Same thing happens with ICA client downloaded from Citrix web site.

Update: Installed Freespire 1.0.13, ICA installed and ran ok. Installed Evolution from CNR, install failed several times and restarted the login, libXm.so and libUil.so were corrupted. Reinstalled libmotif3 and ICA and all worked again.

MISC. BUGS

Freespire 0.0.69 | NA | Jasp | andrew.betts@jasp.com | Default British English Keyboard Layout Incorrect | Y | NIL | Selecting 'British English' in install phase results in keyboard settings that do not allow keys such as "(quote) and '(apostrophe) to function as expected. Resolution requires changing the layout variant from 'intl' to 'basic'. (Control Panel -> Regional and Accessibility -> Keyboard Layout. Select 'United Kingdom' in Active Layout. Change Layout Variant to 'basic'.) Resolved in 2.0 Alpha (Why did I say this was in 0.0.69.?!)

Freespire 0.0.69 | 6.0.53 | Pollywog | linux@shadypond.com | ICQ server refuses connections from Kopete | Y | NIL | Kopete cannot connect to ICQ servers and Kopete indicates the reason for refusal is that ICQ server detects Kopete as an older ICQ client.

Ark

Freespire 0.0.69 | 6.0.53 | UrbanTechs | trent@urban-techs.com | Crashes during expanding of encrypted rar archives. No error message, just dies. I did install unrar, which did not help. Opens fine on other distros.

LBrowser

Freespire 1.0.13 | 6.0.61 | BenandLinux | | lbrowser (firefox) does not save files in selected directory | Y | | All downloaded files are saved in /tmp instead of Desktop. I reproduced this bug on three different computers running rc1 and 1.0.13.

AOL Dialer

Freespire 1.0.13 | 6.0.61 |RobK | | AOL Dialer crashes upon start up | Y | | When trying to run AOL Dialer from the Freespire livecd, the following error message is displayed "A necessary module (tun) cannot be loaded (probably because you are not running as administrator)". Then AOL dialer crashes. It makes no difference if you add adm as a group to the user or you run as root. AOL dialer always displays this error message and crashes. WORKAROUND: Log in as root, open up a terminal and type "modprobe tun". Now AOL Dialer will run without crashing. Perhaps, the start up scripts need to be changed to manually load tun at boot up.

MPlayer Firefox Plugin

Freespire 1.0.13 | 6.0.61 |RobK | | Playing Windows Media Within Firefox crashes firefox | Y | | Easy way to reproduce bug. Go to http://www.mc-internet.com/wedding/samples.html and then click on any of the Windows Media Files. The movie starts to play but there are NO controls (e.g. stop, play) in the window. (You do see the controls if you run a QT movie on this page. Perhaps this is another bug). Now close the window while the WMV movie is playing. Firefox crashes.

LiveCD does NOT Eject

Freespire 1.0.13 | 6.0.61 |RobK | | The LiveCD does not Eject Upon Shutdown | Y | | Boot up into LiveCD. Shutdown Firespire. CD does not eject. You must reboot and hope you are fast enough to push the eject button when your computer BIOS first loads. In my view, this is a bad bug espcially since Firespire is aimed at the Linux newbie (or Windows user). I fear that new Users may get too frustrated with Firespire and throw up their hands. Ubuntu and SimplyMEPIS 6.0 will eject the LiveCD on shutdown. Firespire should too.

Freespire Freezes at BootUp After Activating Wi-Fi

Freespire 1.0.13 | 6.0.61 |RobK | | Freespire Freezes at BootUp After Activating Wi-Fi | Y | | Boot up into Freespire. Go to System Preferences - Networking and activate your WiFi (in my case ath0). But do NOT set it up with essid etc. Then reboot, press F2 to see messages. Freespire will freeze and display:

NO DHCPOFFERS RECEIVED IFACE=ath0 firewall_mode= IP_NETMASK= Could not find the IP/Netmask for ath0 run-parts: /etc/network/if-upd/999firewall exited with a return code 2 snd-seq

Workaround. Boot up using LiveCD. Open up a terminal. Run "sudo vim" and edit /mnt/freespire/etc/network/interfaces. Change "enabled true" to "enabled false" for wifi interface (in my case the WiFI interface was ath0). Shut down and eject CD and reboot.

In my view, Freespire should not hang just because you activated WiFi in your laptop but have not set up an essid etc. I have not seen other distros freeze at boot up when WiFi is activated but not setup.

P.S. I normally activate WiFi so I can scan for other open wireless networks when I am travelling.

Streamtuner does not list 365 or Punkcast Audio stations - sometimes crashes

Freespire 1.0.13 | 6.0.61 |RobK | | Streamtuner does not list 365 or Punkcast Audio stations | Y | | Install streamtuner via CNR or apt-get. Run streamtuner. Click on 365 or Punkcast Audio tab. Click reload stations. You will see none. Sometimes streamtuner will just crash. SOLUTION: You will need to update the Streamtuner package in the Freespire repo to the latest version. (The latest version of Streamtuner solves this problem in other distros).

Package for Synpatic Package Manager has a Bug

Freespire 1.0.13 | 6.0.61 |RobK | | Root Password needed to use Synaptic Package Manager | Y | | Install synaptic package manager using apt-get from Konsole. The package will create a KDE menu item. But when you click on the synpatic package manager, it asks for your ROOT password. Since Freespire is sudo based and people are not expected to set a root password, most people will not be able to use the synpatic package manager.

SOLUTION -- This is easy. Open up the menu editor and change the command for the synaptic package manager from "gksu ...." to "gksudo ...." It should be easy to fix the package in the Freespire repo.

Missing Dependency in Amarok Package

Freespire 1.0.13 | 6.0.61 |RobK | | Missing Dependency in Amarok Package | Y | | Install amarok v1.4.1 from Freespire repo using apt-get or CNR. Run Amarok and play a song. At the end of the song an error message will appear. The error message refers to ruby. Go and install ruby from the Freespire repos. Now at the end of a song, amarok will no longer display an error message. It would appear that the ruby pcakage is NOT listed as a dependency in the Amarok package.

Freespire will no longer boot after activating Atheros WiFi

Freespire 1.0.13 | 6.0.61 |RobK | | Freespire will no longer boot after activating Atheros WiFi | Y | | Turn on the ath0 interface via the System Preferences and enter a bogus ESSID. Then I shut down Freespire without deactivating the ath0 inteface. Reboot, Freespire hangs at this point in the bootup:

NO DHCPOFFERS RECEIVED IFACE=ath0 firewall_mode= IP_NETMASK= Could not find the IP/Netmask for ath0 run-parts: /etc/network/if-upd/999firewall exited with a return code 2 snd-seq

It shoud not make any difference whether the WiFi interface ath0 is activated or not.

I fear that many Freespire laptops may hang at boot up after being moved far enough away from the access point. (e.g Using free wifi at a hotspot and then moving away).

WORKAROUND: Make sure you always deactivate wifi before turning off your computer. If you forget to deactivate wifi and the boot up fails, turn off your computer and boot up using the LiveCD. Open up a terminal and type "sudo vim /mnt/freespire/etc/network/interfaces". Change "enabled true" to "enabled false" for the wifi interface (e.g. ath0). Save changes. Shut Down Computer. Remove LiveCD. Reboot.

Kwifimanager fails to scan Atheros wifi Interfaces

Freespire 1.0.13 | 6.0.61 |RobK | | Kwifimanager fails to scan atheros wifi cards | Y | | Atheros wifi cards or chips are commonly used in IBM and Toshiba Laptops. Install kwifimanager from the freespire repos using CNR or apt-get. Activate the ath0 wireless interface uisng the KDE Control Centre. Run kwifimanager. You will see the frequency change on the display. Click on SCAN FOR NETWORKS. Kwifimanger crashes. (If you run kwifimanger from a terminal, you will see a message "Interface does not support scanning". This is FALSE. Atheros wifi interfaces do support scanning). WORKAROUND: Do NOT use kwifimanager. Download wifi-radar from Debian unstable and install it. (i.e. sudo dpkg -i name_of_package.deb. You might need to install some dependencies from the Freespire repo such as menu and python-gtk2). wifi-radar does support scanning of ath0 atheros wifi interfaces. PLEASE consider adding wifi-radar to the Freespire repos.

Impossible to libhal-dev Package. Version of hal on install CD different than version in Repo. Possible GPL violation

Freespire 1.0.13 | 6.0.61 |RobK | | Missing Dependencies in Freespire Repos for libhal-dev Package | Y | | It is impossible to install the libhal-dev package from the Freespire Repos. When you try to install, the following error message regarding missing dependencies appears:

libhal-dev:

Depends: libhal1 (=0.5.4-0.0.0.50.linspire1.11) but 0.5.4-0.0.0.50.linspire1.12 is to be installed or
libhal1 (<=0.5.4-0.0.0.50.linspire1.11.0.0.m999) but 0.5.4-0.0.0.50.linspire1.12 is to be installed

I also tried to complile hal, libhal and libhal-dev from source using the source. Only version 1.11 of the source is available from either the Freespire Repo or the Freespire Source CD's.

But the Freespire install CD installed v 1.12. It looks like the wrong version of the source was put in the repos and source CD's.

Please correct; otherwise, you may be violating the GPL.

Very difficult to develop a lot of software on Freespire without this package.

Freespire Not Properly Handling USB Headsets - problems with Kmix, Skype etc

Freespire 1.0.13 | 6.0.61 |RobK | | Freespire Not Properly Handling USB Headsets - problems with Kmix, Skype etc | Y | | Freespire is not properly recognizing my Logitech USB 350 Headset.

My internal PC sound card is on /dev/dsp. My USB Logitech Headset shows up on /dev/dsp2.

I can send sound to my USB headset on /dev/dsp2. (e.g. I can hear music in the USB headset when I use lsongs).

But my USB headset does NOT show up in Kmix even if if quit kmix and start it up again.

In addition, when I use the the Logitech 350 USB headset with Skype v1.2.018, I do not hear any sound in the headset. I only hear sound in my external speakers.

I tried to change my sound device from /dev/dsp to /dev/dsp2 in the Skype preferences. Skype reports the sound card is working okay yet I hear no sound on /dev/dsp2.

I tried to change the sound device in KDE Control Panel. It only shows my laptop's internal sound card. This is the same problem as with kmix.

For some reason, Freespire is not properly handling my USB headset.

P.S. My USB headset works fine when I use other LiveCD's like PCLinixOS or SimplyMEPIS (which include Skype and kmix on the LiveCD).
