Freespire will be using the OFTC.net IRC servers to support real-time chat.

Freespire Internet Relay Chat (IRC) Channel


Following are instructions for using XChat as the IRC client:

  1. Open XChat.

  2. Pull-down XChat > Server List... (Ctrl+S)

  3. XChat: Server List dialog box opens > User Information > Nick name: enter Forum Username
  4. Networks > select OFTC > Edit. You will get another XChat: Edit OFTC dialog box.
  5. Servers for OFTC (top most field), you will see irc.oftc.net (default setting is OK). To modify click Edit and you will be prompted in the field for editing. Instead of irc.oftc.net, type optional choices from OFTC site which is the IRC Server name. Default port number of 6667 is OK. Click elsewhere in the dialog box to come out of edit mode.

  6. Connecting > Auto connect to this network at startup
  7. Channels to join: enter #Freespire.
  8. Leave all the other default values. No need of any Connect command, NickServ password, Server password for now. Once done, click Close
    • So, now your IRC client at OFTC for #Freespire is configured.
  9. Click on Connect and you will get connected to the Freespire Network

Advanced steps

  1. Create a text file using Kate (Run Programs > Business & Finance > Advanced Text Editor (Kate)) as follows:
    • msg nickserv identify (password)
    • join #freespire
  2. File > Save As > xchatconnectoftc
  3. Pull-down XChat > Server List... (Ctrl+S)
  4. XChat: Server List dialog box opens
  5. Networks > select OFTC > Edit. You will get another XChat: Edit OFTC dialog box.
  6. Connecting > Connect command: LOAD -e /home/user/directory/xchatconnectoftc (this will be the location of the xchatconnectoftc file you just created)
  7. Once done, click Close
  8. Click on Connect and you will be connected to OFTC with your NickServ password and Channels to join on OFTC.

Registering Your Nick Name

After logging into #Freespire,Type the following

/msg NickServ REGISTER <password> <mail-id>

You will receive several messages and also saying that your nick is registered.

For every login, you have to issue,

/msg NickServ identify <password> to identify yourself to the OFTC network.

Instead you can make it by default XChat do that,

  1. Open XChat, choose Freespire or whatever name you have given to the Network
  2. Click on Edit, you will get another window.There,in the Connect Command,give,msg NickServ identify and in the NickServ password, give,your password what you gave along with the REGISTER command.
