Freespire Development

  • APT+ from SymphonyOS ported and further developed.
  • Inclusion of a separate Freespire/Linspire Control Center where things are managed/configured easily. This helps us to stay aloof from KControl and manage things the Freespire/Linspire way. This would look similar to Mandrake Control Center.
  • I would like to see a GUI editor for Grub with a possibility to change the default booting os, the starting time and the theme of grub. Scheduled for future versions
  • "Extract Here" menu options in konqueror. (Such as those that appear in openSuse 10.0/10.1) For example, if you right click on a tar.bz2, tar.gz, zip, rar, etc. archive, you can choose "Extract Here" or "Extract to..." This is much more convenient than going through the hassle of opening Ark and then extracting files. (--xarius 18:44, 21 July 2006 (PDT)) Scheduled for future versions
  • Using adept-notifier for Freespire so that non CNR users would be receiving the updates without any hassle.More info on Adept
  • I would like to see a "NOTES" column in the CNR user interface. Worst case scenario would be in AISLES. This would be so that we could attach a note to a program. Maybe a different name for said program. Example; for Opale I would enter "Per Bank Acct. mngr" in the "NOTES" column. (Depending on available space/col width.) -jdh77
  • Scripts for automatic configuration of connections, hardware and so on (eg. Kurumin Linux).
  • Modular distribution: it organizes the programs in your system in a new, logical way. Instead of having parts of a program thrown at /usr/bin, other parts at /etc and yet more parts thrown at /usr/share/something/or/another, each program gets its own directory tree, keeping them all neatly separated and allowing you to see everything that's installed in the system and which files belong to which programs in a simple and obvious way. See the Gobolinux site for more on that.

Installer

  • Showing other OS installed in the system already. For example, If Windows,PCLinuxOS,Ubuntu are installed already, show to the User that they are installed and ask whether they would like to add it to Bootloader so that they can boot into them after they install Freespire.
  • If a User selectes a partition (during Advanced Install setup) and that has already Ubuntu/Windows/PCLinuxOS/any other OS, User can be displayed a warning messagebox like, Freespire found that Ubuntu is already installed in this Partition.Do you want to Format and Continue ?
  • The current installer installs the bootloader in the drive on which we select the partition to install. For example, i selected my external hd drive for installing freespire and chose Write MBR, it wrote on /dev/sda.However, i was not asked where to install my bootloader , either in /dev/hda or /dev/sda .So, this can be added to the installer asking where to install the bootloader.
  • Options for the encryption of partitions or the entire disk. This is rumored to be an option in the upcoming deb Etch installer.</s> PLEASE take advantage of it.
  • Option to choose the default booting OS.
  • Show a little more action during the installation (option for detailed output, etc).
  • Windows Based Installer

Desktop Experience

  • Hub OS for the Home
  • Making sure all repository apps that are graphical, work properly under the default privilages, and install an icon into the k menu/gnome menu per desktop established standards.
  • More control over what partitions and/or drives show up in My Computer and the Desktop.
  • User friendly error messages, use layman phrases instead of using terms that only a programmer or experienced user understands.
  • A graphical installer to install programs not downloaded through CNR.
  • More colourful and improved GUI.
  • Simplify Konqueror bar - Way better than the default configuration, it's meant to be simple and it's, for sure.
  • Antivirus and antispam installed by default on E-mail
  • To watch closer (and help, if possible): Printing Standardization - All applications must have the same print dialogs with the same parameters to adjust. All systems (Kde/Gnome...) must manage cups printers in the same way. System printers and parameters and also users parameters must be manageable.

Hardware

  • Have better compatibility with hardware like Nvidia Graphics card like PCI, AGP, PCI-E etc. Have something that I like is what Suse had Sax for graphics card config, and also make sure there is an option for XGL in the future. Should also enable screen cloning (sending the same display signal to both outputs). XGL is in the Roadmap
  • Read and write to NTFS partition It's in the Freespire Roadmap
  • Improved Native Mactel Support

Other

  • Alternative (official) Freespire .isos similar to Ubuntu Community : Gnomespire, XFCEspire, E-spire[Enlightenment].
    • If Freespire were to do this, I'd suggest not using the odd naming scheme Ubuntu has adopted and simply call them things such as "Freespire (Gnome Edition)" and "Freespire (XFCE edition)". The default of KDE can just be "Freespire", with Freespire: KDE edition understood. At the very least though, there should be an option for slightly more advanced users to be able to install and switch to a different desktop environment from the regular ISO. -ZephyrXero (2006-10-04@17:11CDT)
    • I believe *if* Freespire begins to support other desktop environments, a better approach would be to allow the choice during installation (similar to Fedora Core and Suse). Maybe a Freespire DVD Edition could allow for this option? --TheIdiotThatIsMe 09:58, 30 November 2006 (PST)
  • Maybe work with the members of SymphonyOS to further their work and bring it into Freespire as an alternative .iso - maybe Freespire Symphony? I would love to see some of their cutting edge work continue in Freespire. Maybe even Ryan Quinn and his team could be asked to head the Freespire Symphony team? Especially if their work on SymphonyOS is put on hold. APT+ is similar to some of the work currently being discussed on the Freespire boards.
  • Freespire must focus on the countries where peoples are fed up of using pirated versions of Windows and they can not afford original versions for example in pakistan ,bangladesh, afghanistan .I am from pakistan ,i have a strong marketting and distribution network here in pakistan ,i wanna launch freespire with the name as Pakspire on which i must have some share, please tell me is this possible ?,I can create a huge markete for this operating system.contact me at asif_warid@hotmail.com
  • Make Firefox the default program for .php files, it will be handy for CNR.
