Why klik is ideal for Freespire

Freespire lets you use CNR (subscription required), and apt-get. Without klik, installing 3rd-party software on your Freespire system can break it. Using klik, you can never break your system since it operates totally independent of CNR and apt. klik does not change the files installed on your system. Hence, you can add software using klik without ever risking to break Freespire.

How does klik differ from CNR?

  • klik requires no sign-up, registration or subscription
  • The klik client is licensed under the GPL already now
  • While similar in experience, klik uses technology different from CNR
  • klik does not use or interfere with the local apt/dpkg package database on your computer
  • klik cannot mess up your computer, the worst thing that can happen is that a klik'd application won't run
  • klik can also run on distributions other than Linspire and Freespire
  • Every application gets "installed" into one single file, which is placed on your desktop and can be moved anywhere
  • You can put klik'd applications on USB stick, CD-ROM, or DVD and run them from there
  • klik has applications CNR hasn't, such as Google Earth
  • klik is a true community project

How to prepare Freespire for klik

Before you can use klik, you need to prepare Freespire. No worries, it's simple!

Since Freespire lacks the "rpm" package, you need to install that using Freespire's apt:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install rpm

Now, install the klik client as usual. (As the user that will use klik, not as root)

 wget klik.atekon.de/client/install -O - | sh

Done! Enjoy using the free universe of klik software!
