Home-->Community-->Bugs!-->Known and Verified Bugs

In the coming weeks, Freespire will be rolling out their bug tracking system to the community. In the meantime, you can find known bugs here, which have been verified and are being worked on in Freespire. This area is for verified bugs only! To report a new bug, go here. You can also find the release notes here.

All of the below bugs will be, or are being, worked on for inclusion in future beta releases, unless otherwise noted.

Known Bugs in Freespire Beta 1

IMPORTANT: 128MB of useable system RAM is the bare minimum recommended, with a suggested minimum of at least 256MB. Note: shared video ram, which is allocated by BIOS, can decrease useable system RAM and cause failed installs.

INSTALLING/BOOTING

  • No Reiser 4 support.
  • Installer error 154: 'could not format partition' needs reboot message
  • Some newer model motherboards need kernel boot option 'irqpoll' to be used in order to install.
  • No 'eject cd' splashscreen after install on some machines that have newer ATI Video Cards, and VIA on-board video.

KDE/DESKTOP

  • Setting of the date & time will not 'take' until a log out, and re-login to KDE desktop session occurs.
  • The icons, colors and themes are still being adjusted, so you may see some sporadic anomalies with icons, etc.
  • Dual-Layer DVD media burning within current k3B is sporadic.
  • kfloppy auto-detection of floppy size is broken.
  • kdeprintfax attempts to invoke non-existent kaddressbook
  • No support for accessing NTFS partitions
  • Screen Resize & Rotate Blank Window on choosing Configure Display | To reproduce this bug, Open Launch-->Run Programs-->Utilities-->Screen Resize and Rotate. You will get an icon on the Taskbar. Right click, and select Configure Display.Instead of getting options being displayed, a blank window appears.
Note: Joey | This bugs is logged in the internal bug tracking system. Move this to Known bugs section.

CNR

  • New CNR6 (version 0.51 and later) using cURL breaks Lassist login (Here is a workaround.)
  • VirusSafe and SurfSafe don't work from the default account until one logs out of the KDE desktop and re-logs into default account.
  • Surfsafe icon is missing from the system tray (kicker panel) after installation/activation.
  • CNR Proxy settings configuration page not yet functional. (most likely will be phased out until CNR7)

WEB BROWSER

  • The theme and icons are still being worked on, so you might see some minor anomalies with these.
  • There is still some work being done on the in-line spell checking. For example, in-line spell checking doesn't work in all places in the browser on some websites. Ironically, posting in the Freespire forums is one of the sites where it's not yet working. It does, however, work in the wiki and most other places on the Internet.
  • Sometimes the browser has a long pause when switching between tabs, and eventually, you can't get the tabs to switch at all. Once in this state, if you close down Lbrowser, and try to restart it, you get a message that it's already running (even though you've closed it and it's no longer showing up in the task bar as running). You have to manually kill the Lbrowser-bin process or you can't restart the browser without getting the "I'm already running" message. (Shutting down and restarting the browser in this way, does however, make the slow tab switching problem go away, until it starts doing it again later.)
  • When you add icons to the browser tool bar using the "Customize" feature (right click on the toolbar), when you hover over any of the shortcuts that you might add, you get the same graphic, a back arrow. Bug in icon theme probably.
  • There are still misc. things being adjusted with the browser, such as remembering window size and position, etc.
  • We will be adding "Send page" functionality into the browser.
  • We will be adding a this splash screen when starting the browser, so you know it's loading.

EMAIL CLIENT

  • The theme and icons are still being worked on, so you might see some minor anomalies with these.
  • Mailto links in Lphoto and Gaim will not compose mail unless a browser has been previously opened during your session.
  • The 'add to dictionary' function in the spell checker does not work.
  • Add "Freespire" and "Linspire" to the dictionary.
  • When you click on an email link in the email program, it will not always bring the browser forward.
  • when you send emails, the progress bar may not seem to do anything (theme issue).
  • There are still misc. features being adjusted with the email client, such as remembering window size and position, etc.
  • We will be adding this splash screen when starting the email program, so you know it's loading.
  • Expanded, personalized dictionary hasn't been added yet (with words like "Freespire")

OPENOFFICE.ORG

  • Memory usage defaults have not yet been set which will help decrease the load time for the OpenOffice.org applications on machines with adequate memory.

OTHER MISC. APPLICATIONS

  • Gparted sometimes chokes on resizing reiser partitions
  • VirusSafe is not yet fully supported.
  • SurfSafe is not yet fully supported.

APPLICATIONS IN CNR WAREHOUSE

HARDWARE

  • Some newer motherboards, especially HP brand computers, exhibit IRQ errors in the syslog, thus requiring the boot parameter 'irqpoll' to be used for installation and/or bootup success.
  • Resuming from Hibernation randomly generates dcop error/jack sound daemon error if using nvidia or ati commercial video driver.
  • Basic support for Alps touchpad, ie: no support configurable scrolling or tapping.
Video/Display
  • no 3-D support for savage video chipsets
  • some Intel video chipsets, especially widescreen laptops using these chips, do not have chip bios' that correctly report default resolutions and refresh rates to the video driver/kernel.
  • Some newer VIA video chipsets are not supported.
  • ATI 'fglrx' drivers show flashing neon colors while booting (on some chipsets)
  • Switching to external monitors on some laptops will fail to initiate, or not cycle through all modes. In addition, some laptops will lose trackpad function while monitor/lcd cycling.
Wifi-Networking
  • no WEP support for certain wireless cards: RAlink RT2500, Cisco Aironet, <add more chipsets here>
  • some Atheros wifi chips scan too much, causing wireless connection to drop/reconnect often.
  • Intel Gigabit chipset 82573L not supported in 2.6.10 kernel
  • some wifi adapters don't reconnect upon hibernate resume: ACX, Atheros, Atmel, Prism
Sound-Audio
  • Intel High Definition Audio (HDA) not supported in 2.6.10 kernel
  • Surround sound is largely unsupported with current alsa modules/kmix.
  • No support for some nForce4 soundchip
Hotplug - Peripherals detection
  • Hotplug events attempt to access floppy drive
  • No support for Texas Instruments multicard reader hub chipsets
Modems:
  • kppp reports incorrect connection speed
  • most PcTel modems not supported
  • Topic Semiconductor modems (pci id: 151F:0000) not supported
  • kfax support for softmodems is spotty at best.
  • USB modem support very sporadic

MISC. BUGS

Updating from Linspire

  • In this first few beta releases, to help keep the focus of testing on the OS itself, the "updating" functionality of the installer has been removed. This will be replaced in a later build, so users will eventually be able to move from Beta x to Beta y by way of updating, vs re-installing. The update functionality is only intended to support updating from one version of Freespire to the next, not between Linspire and Freespire.
