Can I make copies of the Freespire CD and sell and/or give them away?

Yes, in fact, we hope you do! Freespire is always made available for distribution, now and forever, so spread it around! Whether or not you charge for the copies is entirely up to you. To learn how to make as many copies of the Freespire CD as you like, and how to pass them out to friends and family (or sell them for a profit), visit the Share It! page.

Can I modify the open source parts of Freespire, and then redistribute it with the proprietary pieces included?

Yes, but unless you distribute the complete Freespire CD, unmodified, as part of the Share It! program, you will need to get licenses from any of the different license holders if you wish to include any of the proprietary components. You can find a list of the different proprietary pieces and what kind of licensing you'll need to secure for redistribution on the Summary of Proprietary Components page. Another option is to use the OSS Edition of Freespire for your work, as it does not contain any proprietary code, making redistribution easy, without the need to secure or pay for any licensing from a 3rd party. Please also see the Freespire End User License Agreements for more information.

Can I create other projects based on Freespire and use the "Freespire" trademark or a derivative thereof?

Freespire is a trademark of Linspire, Inc. and permission to use the mark is required in most cases. As soon as you modify Freespire, it's no longer, well, "Freespire," so to avoid confusion it should be called a new name, one that is not similar or confusing to the Freespire name. This is true for any trademark, including those from other open source projects, such as Debian, Firefox, etc. This would also hold true for any similar marks or derivatives of the Freespire mark, such as Gspire, Eduspire, etc. Please see Trademark Guidelines for more information.

Can I modify the CNR client software and use the "CNR" trademark or a derivative thereof for that new application?

CNR is in the process of being moved to an open sourced license, and others will then be allowed to modify and redistribute the CNR client software under the terms of its open source license, which specific licensing terms will be made available at that time. The term "CNR" is a trademark of Linspire, Inc. and permission to use the mark is required in most cases. This is true for any trademark, including those from other open source projects, such as Debian, Firefox, etc. This would also hold true for any similar marks or derivatives of the CNR mark. Please see Trademark Guidelines for more information.
