How Freespire is different from Linspire

Below you will find a list of some of the main differences between Linspire 5.1 and Freespire 1.0. For a more complete list and explanation of some of these items, visit the Freespire Roadmap.

  • Free to download and redistribute.
  • All code that can be open sourced is, including the CNR client. **
  • Two versions available (regular and OSS Edition).
  • Use CNR or apt-get to install software from the CNR Warehouse (or other Debian repositories). **
  • The CNR Warehouse and the CNR Client will use standard .deb packaging for all free, open source software. **
  • No default root login. **
  • Disk partitioning added. **
  • Web browser and email client will be based on Firefox and Thunderbird, respectively, not Mozilla. **
  • New kcontrol module for easily changing the default browser. **
  • Available as a VMWare Virtual Appliance. **
  • New wallpapers, icons, themes and other branding. **
  • Basic developer tools and packages will be included in the OS by default.
  • Autorun removed for .exe files, Amorok, CDs, etc. **
  • Tutorials will not be installed by default.
  • The VirusSafe and SurfSafe icons removed from the system tray. **
  • New graphical networking debugging tool included. **
  • Misc. changes and bug fixes. **


How Linspire is different from Freespire

The items designated with two asterisks (**) in the above list will also be made available in the next release of Linspire.

Here are some of the things you'll find in Linspire, but not Freespire:

  • Tutorials included by default
  • Additional layer of ease of use (turn off multiple desktops, for example, to avoid confusing new users).
  • Support
  • Better hardware certification and other programs for OEMs
  • Additional drivers, DVD support, CNR membership included, etc. (Coming in future version of Linspire.)
