Freespire 2.0 Alpha2U Release Notes

OS Version: 1.2.49

Known Issues

Installing

  • No upgrade path available from Freespire 1.0 or previous versions of Freespire 2.0 Alphas
  • During the setup process some text fields may be undersized for entering the machine name and user information. This bug is not present on all systems.
  • No CD Eject "3,2,1" Splash when completing install from CD.
  • "Configure Network Settings" in Setup Wizard does not function at this time.

Booting & GRUB

  • Automatic boot menu management does not always work. Do not install if you are not experienced at repairing Grub configurations and MBRs.
  • Alternate OSs may not be detected and listed.
  • Create or Modify partition on this computer's hard drive option in grub does not work

Startup Wizard

  • Ksu dialog appears requesting password when attempting to change settings from within the startup wizard.

Video

  • Proprietary NVidia and ATI drivers are not automatically installed. This may result in degraded video performance and the loss of 3D support. Manual installation and configuration of these drivers is required for those whom wish to use these drivers.

Missing Graphics

  • Login Manager (kdm).
  • Launch menu button
  • Miscellaneous icons

Sound

  • forward-oss is to be considered ALPHA and UNTESTED. This said please provide very detailed bug reports when you find an issue related to this kernel module.

Networking

  • Network Control Panel has been substitued with KNetworkManager for the time being.
  • Firewall configuration, firewall is disabled.
  • Modem drivers are not included.
  • ISP configuration programs.
  • CNR is not supported.
  • Bigpond and AOL dialers have not been included.

Wireless

  • Wireless is mostly non-functional out of the box for this release.

Printing

  • cupsys was broken upstream.

Applications

  • Menus are not organized.
  • K3b will need to be launched as root to burn CDs.
  • Nvu is not included in the build, and may not be available in the apt repository.

Apt

  • apt will suggest to remove the following necessary packages:
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
 xfonts-scalable vnc-common jfsutils squashfs-tools xfonts-75dpi reiserfsprogs xfsprogs tightvncserver xfonts-100dpi
   libltdl3
   Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

DO NOT USE 'apt-get autoremove' TO CLEAR THIS WARNING! IT WILL BREAK YOUR INSTALL!

Lbrowser 2.0

  • Many filetypes and mime types are not associated properly to their appropriate plug-ins. If you find such issues, please feel free to report a bug or vote on an existing bug.

Lmail 2.0

  • This is a BETA VERSION of Lmail 2.0 which contains a large number of bugs, and we encourage user bug submissions.

Live CD

  • KDM log-in access issue
    • Requires Ctrl+Alt+F4 > passwd (set password) > Ctrl+Alt+F7
  • Restart Computer via Live CD, reboots w/o ejecting CD

Miscellaneous

  • Minimal ACPI support.
  • ALPS touchpads may require manually setting the variable "SHMConfig" to be "on" in xorg.conf.
  • No default screen saver defined.

Installing

  • No sound in RealPlayer without using audiowrapper
  • Lbrowser does not open .rm and .ram files in RealPlayer

Freespire 2.0 Alpha1 Release Notes

OS Version: 1.1.57
Release Date: 2006-11-22

Install:

  • Advanced Install "next" button is off screen
    • Solution: Tab past the MBR selection to the next (hidden) selection, then hit enter.
  • No CD eject screen
  • CD doesn't auto eject after install
  • No upgrade path available from Freespire 1.0

Boot:

  • Automatic boot menu management does not always work. Do not install if you are not experienced at repairing Grub configurations and MBRs.
  • No bootsplash support.
    • Boots into verbose (not silent w/ splash) mode.
  • LiveCD boot opens KDM login. Following steps required to login:
    1. Ctrl+Alt+F4
    2. At the freespirelive login prompt: root
    3. At the command prompt:# passwd
      Enter new UNIX password: set password (Retype)
    4. # exit
    5. Ctrl+Alt+F7
    6. At the KDM login: root (and password established above)
    • Changing clock during LiveCD start-up wizard results in a KDE Control Module crash
    • Restart Computer via Live CD, halts at power management
      • Ctrl+Alt+Del ineffective (results in Slab: xxxxx kB)

Sound:

  • Sound slider in startup wizard is not operational
  • Sound for quick-Switched User accounts inoperative

  • Network Control Panel (wireless networking must be manually configured information below)
    • Launch Terminal Program (Konsole), at the command prompt enter "sudo iwconfig"
    • Look at the iwconfig output, and determine which interface (ethx) is wireless.
    • From the command prompt "sudo ifconfig [interface] up
    • From the command prompt "sudo iwconfig [interface] [essid x] [enc e]" x: ESSID name; e: encryption key.
      # iwconfig ethx essid linksys enc abcdef0123456789abcdef0123
      # iwconfig ethx essid linksys (non-encrypted)
    • From the command prompt "sudo dhclient [interface]"
    • For more detail information about how to set up wireless networking, please run "man iwconfig"
    • Note: Some wireless cards will not accept the ifconfig/iwconfig.

Grahics missing:

  • Login Manager

  • Miscellaneous icons

Menus are not organized

  • NVU not in a menu but included in the build.
  • Diagnostic Report no in a menu included in the build. Run "sysreport" from command line.

Miscellaneous

  • CNR is not included
  • Apt repository is pointing to Debian Sid, this should be updated to Freespire repositories in the next release.
  • No ACPI support. No hibernation.
  • Synaptics driver not loaded into System Tray
  • Changing clock in the control panel results in a KDE Control Module crash.
  • Flash player is version 9 Beta.

  • Bug fixes for ISP connection tools.
