A text editor is an application that is used to write and edit plain text. Text editors under Unix and Unix-like operating systems such as Linux are much more sophisticated than the default editors in other operating systems, in that these editors allow more efficient editing, with extra features. These editors are not intended to be as simple or lightweight as the editors under Windows such as Notepad. However there are basic editors with a minimum of features if the extra power seems intimidating.Under Unix and Unix-like operating systems, most system development and administration is done with text editing tools. Because of this there are many advanced editors available for Linux, which have a steeper learning curve for complete mastery. However, there is also a great number of simpler editors available for less advanced uses.
