The Basics

Getting Started

One of the greatest programs that comes with Freespire is it's Instant Messenger that is powered by Gaim. Gaim allows you to use several instant messaging and chat services using a single program with a simple and intuitive user interface; in fact, Gaim is compatible with 9 chat services, including the popular AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and Internet Relay Chat (IRC). In this guide we will cover setting up the program to use these particular ones since AIM, MSN, and Yahoo are the most common for personal communication, and IRC since it is used for the Freespire Community chats.

The very first time you start up the Instant Messenger, you will be presented with this screen:

The Protocol field is where you will select your service that you would like to setup your first account for. Remember, you can use multiple accounts since you can use multiple protocols at once! Since most users have AIM, you can just leave it on AIM and focus onto the Screen Name field. Here you will enter your AIM screen name, the same you would enter as if this were AIM. Then enter your screen name's password just below it.

The Alias field is pretty neat, as it allows you to give this account a name that will be displayed on your chat windows during your conversations. This helps keep track of what services you're using in which conversations.

The next two options, Remember password and Auto-login, are pretty self explanatory; Remember password automatically enters your password for this account when you start Gaim, and Auto-login signs this account online when you start Gaim. Next, you can add a budy icon by clicking that big Open button and selecting an avatar or icon on your computer's hard drive.

When you are done, you can click Save. This will bring you to a window that is titled Accounts, and has your brand new account listed to the left, with two checkboxes, one that is titled Online and the other Auto-login (which will be checked if you selected this option earlier). If you would like to sign on now, you can click the box that says “Online”, and viola! You're signed on to your account using Gaim! Now that you have one of your screen names running in Gaim, you probably want to go ahead and setup the your others for MSN and Yahoo right? No problem. Just click on Add, and repeat the process using your MSN and Yahoo information. Pretty simple right? Of course it is!

Setting Buddy Info

But wait, dont you want to set your Buddy Info for your AIM screen name, like you did back with regular AIM? Well of course. This option is hidden a little bit, but easy to find once you know where it's at. Over on your buddy list, just click on Tools, Account Actions, Your Screen Name (AIM/ICQ), Set User Info. And you will be presented with a screen such as this one! The rest is pretty self explaining, and is just like AIM's user info. Everything you type here will be able to be viewed by other AIM users simply them right clicking your screen name on their buddy list and clicking view info, or by clicking view info on their chat window when they are talking to you. So go ahead now, add some info about yourself. Dont worry, we'll wait, we're not going anywhere? Put in something funny and catchy? That's great! Let's move on.

Setting An Alias

Now, you remember that little Alias feature from when you created your account? Well you can also give people on your buddy lists an Alias, so instead of having a list of screen names on your buddy list you can put their names or nicknames on there! This aliases will also show in your chat windows. All you have to do to set an alias is right click their screen name on your buddy list and click on Alias... and then enter their name! Aliases are a pretty fun yet simple feature.

Using IRC

Now it's time to use Gaim to connect to the Freespire Community channel on IRC. Excited yet? I am! Okay, to connect Gaim to IRC, go to your buddy list, click on Tools, then Accounts, and click Add once again. This time, next to Protocol, click on the drop down box and select IRC. Then where it says Screen Name, enter any desired nickname for IRC. Where it says server, change it to irc.oftc.net (this puts you on the server where the Freespire Community is located). You may enter a password, but it's not required. Click on save, and then sign your IRC name on.

You will then be presented with a screen that looks like this in your chat window.

Do not be alarmed by any of the information here if it looks like this. You are now connected to the oftc.net server. In order to connect to the Freespire Community channel type in /join #Freespire, and you are now in the Freespire Community chat! You can now communicate with some of fellow Freespirers in real time, if the forum is a bit too slow for you.

Now that you are connected on IRC, it may be a good idea to learn some of the basic commands and learn a little more about IRC. There is a wonderful basics guide over at http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/new2irc.html

I hope this has been helpful, and I hope you enjoy Instant Messenger!
